About
I love trying out new things, especially when it comes to internet technology. I never really kept a journal, but it's something that I've always wanted to do. Now, everybody will get a chance to look inside my twisted, and somewhat-warped mind. I've also subscribed to Audio Blog, so a few times a week, I'll leave actual voice blogs. Very cool!

Packing for my two-day SARS trip
Well, I'm done computing for a while... I spent most of my night closing up some loose ends for work. You believe that!? Let me repeat... I spent most of my evening updating documents for fricken work! This is the worst time for me to take a two-day trip to Toronto. Everybody wants something yesterday, and everything is going to hell in a handbasket. Overwhelmed? I can't believe that I actually have gut-ache over work! The two main programs that I'm on are totally high-risk: Dodge SRT-10 Spoiler and Mopar PT Cruiser Ground Effect Kit...

SRT-10 Spoiler
Roush is tier-2 to Decoma on this program, so one would figure that they have everything on the ball. The antithesis is true. The knuckleheads at DaimlerChrylser PVO have no idea what they want out of life. They want a five-foot long blow-molded spoiler that not only passes all FMVSS, but they want it for $1.00. Since we're tier-1 to DCX, we basically have to take the brunt of Roush's f-ups. The knuckheads also want the spoiler foam-filled, which is totally unproven, and a tack-off rib in the middle of the part which basically creates two cavities. Try filling that with foam. On top of that, throw that spoiler into a 220 F oven, and it comes out looking like a stuffed Christmas turkey. S2 Launch in Mexico is just around the corner, and DCX's Quality Engineer thinks she's going to save the world. If I could GIVE this program back to Roush, I'd pay $500,000. I can't.

PT Cruiser Ground Effects Kit
Oh boy... here's another goat rodeo. Bascially, Decoma is producing a complete kit for Mopar in about six months. If we pull this thing off, we end up total heros. We started out design back in September. It was done in October, and guess what? DaimlerChrysler Styling didn't like some of the feature lines so we basically had to redesign the whole class-A surface from scratch... and we did that in two weeks. We then created production tooling in record time, molded some parts, and realized some changes were needed. Of course, Mopar doesn't want to pay for any of these tooling changes, since they're no "design repsonsible", yet they like to change the design at their whim. We're now at the point of making changes that we think are necessary, and Mopar comes back asking us to change it yet again, all the while trying to get parts PPAP'ed and out to customers by June 1. My life is a living hell dealing with half-wits... I can't escape them... they're everywhere I turn.

Decoma SVE... what the heck is that?
What is Decoma SVE? SVE stands for Specialty Vehicle Engineering. Decoma SVE is actually the company that I work for now, which is a spin-off of Decoma. SVE is the leg that does low-volume production such as aftermarket accessory kits (e.g. Mopar Accessories) and special low-volume OEM jobs (e.g. Dodge SRT-10). In a nutshell, all it means is super high-risk programs that cut ALL corners of a properly designed and validated part. Many think this is the only division that is going to make money for Decoma in troubled times. High-level entities are watching us like hawks: 1) To steal and copy some of the unorthodox quick-to-market design and manufacturing models we're using, and 2) To be there and if we fail to say "I told ya so". It's a dog-eat-dog world where I work.

ERP System Overview
On top of my normal duties with the two goat rodeos above, I've also been slated "The Computer Guy" for our Specialty Vehicle Engineering (SVE) division. What exactly does this mean? Well, SVE's new assembly plant, SVEA, is a neophyte in the production world. Most of the people that work there now have very little idea on how OEM releases actually work. It's all basic EDI strings that get pumped out of mainframes from the OEMs. EDI is the mode of transport for all part releases, inventory control, forecasting, shipping, and even payment. In a nutshell, an OEM sends out releases to a plant, they're authorized to ship, and then they get paid. If you don't dot your i's or cross your t's (literally), then you don't get paid. Simple things like and incorrect shipping label could mean the difference between getting paid or getting broke. Ridiculous, really.

Anyway, our SVEA division is having difficulties understanding how a good ERP System handles releases, namely EDI strings. So I go elected by our VP, to champion this ill fiasco. I've touched a little on ERP Sytems in the past... I've hated every second of it. I hate legacy databases. I hate legacy systems. I hate interfaces that are designed to "talk" to legacy systems. I hate EDI strings. I hate releases. I hate ASN's (Advance Shipping Notices), 836's, 844's and any all three-digit forms that are tied to ERP Systems.

Why am I even bothering to overview something that I totally despise? I ask myself that same question too, every day I wake up. The VP thinks that I'm going to be some kind of savior. What they need to do is actually hire someone that's a guru with ERP systems, and actually enjoy toying with it. Oh well. Off to Toronto I go. Joy.
