On February 21, 1995, my father received a new heart that was tranplanted at the University of Michigan Hospital. On that day, his life changed, as well as the lives of his offspring. I'm grateful that medicine extended my father's life, and kept him with us for so many years. If anybody deserved a second lease on life, it is him. My only wish is that I can live a life of integrity and honor like he has. (I'm not there quite yet).

EDIT: Changed topic title.

I second that. I am truly affected, for life, by the miracle that happened that day, back in 1995! I love you dad!

I share your sentiments. Your father is a good man and it is terrific to see him doing well. It feels good knowing a kind, intelligent person like him got a second chance. We all benefited from his transplant.
peace,
mark

Thanks for the comments, Mark. I know you have firsthand experience in the miracle of medicine (for those that don't know, Mark received a liver transplant about six months ago).

And, Mark, your sig is right on target: "Health is the first wealth." Many of us, including myself, feel that we're indestructible and infallible.

Been gone from the forums for a while and came across this post just today... thought I would briefly comment.

I agree that it's simply amazing... being part of the old neighborhood clan, I remember some of the tough times your family was going through. In fact if I recall correctly, your sister Gina had played a strong role in keeping your father on this God given earth, right? Everyone should know CPR!

If you don't mind me asking, did you ever know who the donor was? Was there ever contact with the family following the succesful transplant? I can't imagine every loosing a friend or familiy member with a strong heart... although tragic as it may be, it would sure make me feel proud that a friend/family member would consider the give the gift of life. I only wish more people would be willing to identify themselves as donors in such an event. I know since your father received a heart transplant, it's always a reminder for me to openly discuss my desire to be an organ donor and to keep my driver's licence updated with donor information in such an event.

When my dad first got out, he did not want to know anything about the donor. He was actually feeling VERY weird with someone else's heart beating inside his body. It must have some major phychological affects to a human mind. He didn't want to push the envelope, and did not question anything. He was just glad to be alive.

A few months later, he had second thoughts, and thought about finding out about the donor. There is a database that has all that information. The donor's family requested privacy.

Then, a few years later, the donor's family requested to find out about the donee's. There were a few of them: left lung, right lung, liver, perhaps even kidney(s). I know that there's at least three people walking the earth now with this person's organs. I'm not sure what transpired... perhaps my dad lost contact, or the donor's family lost contact, but we never found out. All it would take would be a phone call to the University of Michigan, assuming that the donor's family were still open to the fact.

Medical Science amazes me.

If this happened 3000 years ago, there would be scripture written about it.

Nope. I talked mom and dad out of contacting the family. Figured it would be best to leave them alone. As a matter of fact, I'm not sure the family was seeking info on the donees. I think there was a grace period, and the grace period expired.

I love medicine. Should have been a doctor.

Actually, in reality, the donor family actually tried to get ahold of us. I think dad said he didn't want to meet them, for fear of some negative physiological effects due to psychological influences. I think he doesn't want to add any complexity to the lengthening of his life.

Happy 8th Year Anniversary, Dad! It's been eight years since my dad has someone else's heart beating on its own inside of his chest cavity. Praise Allah and U of M.
